From its beginnings, 71 Legacy has grown in operations, securing 90% of the world’s raw supply of Ammolite. We ethically mine the raw Ammolite and create jewellery and home products that are loved the world over by fashionable people, lovers of colour and fine collectors.
In 1981, Ammolite was officially designated a precious gemstone by CIBJO. Ammolite is the last of the gemstones accepted in the past 300 years and amongst the rarest, placing it alongside its peers Opal, Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald.
Founded from a passion for paleontology and an entrepreneurial spirit – in 1979 Rene Vandervelde purchased a young business. Rene’s vision was to introduce the world to the beautiful and captivating Ammolite. Discovered in 1906 by the Geological Survey of Canada, Rene had heard of Ammolite and was fascinated by its history, rarity and cultural significance. Indigenous Canadians refer to Ammolite as the “Buffalo Stone”, others refer to Ammolite as the “Energy Stone” or “Spirit Stone”. Ammolite comes from the fossilization of Ammonite Cephalopods, which are found around the world yet, only in the Bearpaw Formation of Southern Alberta did they mineralize and become the rare and colourful gemstone. To this day, 71 Legacy is the leading Ammolite producer and brand, delighting customers internationally.
